Government Names Review of Malachi's Way II: Malachi's Revenge

Mike Malachi - Malachi's Way II: Malachi's Revenge (Music In Me Production Inc.)

I leaked a great track with Skarr Akbar a few months ago, but Mike Malachi's new album is now officially here, and it's really his most accomplished work to date. That probably doesn't mean anything to you if you didn't hear his previous records, which were all pretty solid and featured crazy laid back soul beats by Baltimore club producer Ron Rico, but this is definitely a step forward from someone who was good to begin with. I don't know if his voice is recorded better on this one or if he's just getting more at home in the booth, but the sound on this one and the voice and flow all came together a lot more than on the previous records. Still a little mellow for my tastes, but that ain't always a problem depending on your mood. Check out Mike Malachi on MySpace.

Mike Malachi f/ Billo - "Deadly Alliance" (mp3)
I remember when I first met Mike about 3 years ago and it came up in conversation that he's cousins with Billo and I was like damn, y'all should be doing some songs together, so it's cool to finally hear them both on a track. One of Billo's labelmates from For The People Entertainment, Yuk, actually makes a guest spot on another track on this album.

A Couple Articles I wanted to Share......

Jonathan Thompson

Baltimore Indie Music Examiner

The trouble with Baltimore hip hop

There is definitely more to Baltimore hip hop than just Murdaland, however. In the early nineties the commercialization of hip hop culture spearheaded by MTV slid a few impressive nails into the coffin of hip hop's golden age. Many "true heads" turned their back on the new face of the culture and continued to play their Afrika Bambaataa records in their rooms alone while others instead simply continued to make music independent of the pop culture phenomenom that had hijacked the hip hop scene in New York. Many groups like Company Flow were at the front of the new independent hip hop scene, which is now seriously rivalling mainstream rap music. In Baltimore the most prominent face of golden age-minded independent hip hop is Labtekwon. Labtekwon, considered the "Thelonius Monk of hip hop" by Chuck D, is now 28 releases deep with 15 full length albums on his own label Ankh Ba Records, many of very significant substance, as well as multiple releases on Mush, the well respected indie hip hop label that helped launch Aesop Rock on the national stage. Along with Labtekwon there are other traditional emcees that are both conservative hip hop purists as well as progressive, original artists such as those on Brake Fast Records or Mike Malachi. These artists are the ones who have the potential to hold together Baltimore's hip hop community being the fulcrum between the more talented of mainstream minded artists and the more abstract indie acts.

It's been a couple years since I heard anything new from Mike Malachi, but his new album Malachi's Way 2:Malachi's Revenge is due out in June. The tracks on his MySpace page right now are sounding really good, especially this one, which features a few guests, including his producer Ron Rico on a verse.

The Lost Sessions 07-08 (I Only Came Back For U and The Book Of Malachi vol.1)

Book of M.A.L.A.C.H.I. cover by Kelly Connelly

(Book of M.A.L.A.C.H.I. cover photo by Kelly Connelly)

Book Of Malachi was originally the follow up to Malachi's Way! The music I was making for this could be considered conceptual. Each song had some type of relevance to a movie theme it was written in a creative space! At the time I was going through alot of personal issues that made this music morbid at times kinda cryptic honestly. Highlights of The Book Of Malachi were "Can't You See What Were Going Thru" Feat Skarr Akbar and Challenge The Champion these were my favorites. I reached out to Skarr and he delivered on the song it was offical! Eventually I recorded maybe 9 or 10 songs and overall I truly wasnt pleased with the end result of the LP collectively so I scrapped the project. It was too dark n wasnt really music I think would gravitate to if they heard it. So Me n Ron went back to the drawing board and decided to start fresh. So we went to work on "I Only Came Back For U" and we felt that we were moving in a forward direction but unfourtnately the songs we made just once again didnt do it for me. I wanted to break out of this realm of music I'd been placed. The production we had would just classify us as old school backpack rappers. I'll be 26 on Jan 11th dont get me wrong I just wanted more lively more up tempo music. So This project was scrapped as well and we went back to the drawing board: MALACHI'S WAY 2: MALACHI'S REVENGE which is due out in 09 but until then here's the LOST SESSION: (I Only Came Back For U and Book of Malachi):
